The CW officially began their DC Comics television shared universe with the premiere of Arrow in 2012, following Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) on his mission of vigilantism as the Green Arrow. Since then, The CW has added The Flash spinoff, the Legends of Tomorrow team-up time travel series, and most recently acquired Supergirl from CBS - where the Girl of Steel resided for its entire first season. Now, with all four DC Comics shows included within the multiverse under one roof on The CW, the network has already teased a massive crossover.
Of course, fans have been discussing the potential for crossover between these four DC Comics series since Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl were developed by Arrow and The Flash co-creator Greg Berlanti - and one question that has repeatedly come up is whether the shows would feature a musical crossover episode. Now, Amell has commented on the topic of whether viewers will see him belt a show-stopping tune alongside Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl, Grant Gustin’s The Flash, and Arthur Darvill’s Rip Hunter.
In an interview with MTV News promoting his newest big screen release, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Amell was asked point blank about a musical crossover and the actor responded with a Scarlet Speedster-quick “No.” When pressed further, Amell expanded on his disinterest in a musical aspect to the network’s DC Comics crossover: “No. I’m out! I’m the first one. I get to draw the line, and I draw the line at musical.”
Of course, talk of a musical crossover has largely been fueled solely by the fans with very little talk coming from those involved with the DC shared TV universe. However, Supergirl star Jeremy Jordan, who plays Winn Schott, was asked about the possibility prior to the show’s first season, though he urged fans to wait for the Girl of Steel to establish herself before requesting such a genre-bending element.
Still, in addition to Jordan - who starred in a number of shows on Broadway before making the jump to television in NBC’s musical drama Smash - many of The CW’s superhero series boast incredible musical theater talent. Supergirl’s Laura Benanti (Astra/Alura Zor-El) is a Tony Award winner, while Benoist previously starred on Glee; The Flash’s Gustin also had a recurring role on Glee, Jesse L. Martin (Joe West) was in the original cast of RENT, and Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon) has proven to have musical talent as well. As for Legends of Tomorrow, Darvill has starred in the musical Once both on Broadway and in the West End. So, all this is to say, that The CW’s Arrowverse is absolutely chock full of musical talent.
But, as Amell points out, the crossover between Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl still needs to be true to the tone and characters all four shows:
Certainly, managing to bring heroes - and potentially villains - from all four shows into one crossover event is going to be a difficult task, especially in terms of whether the story will span one hour, or four one-hour episodes throughout the Monday - Thursday schedule. In the past, the crossovers between Arrow and The Flash, or Supergirl and The Flash have largely provided fans with exciting TV, though not necessarily episodes that were as well-executed as the shows on their own.
“They have to show me how they’re going to do this magical four-show crossover. It was hard enough when it was two shows and mixing in Legends a little bit. To make it four shows? I’m dumbfounded. … I’ve been thinking a lot about this, and I think the writers have as well. We had a discussion, and I said, ‘Look man. Arrow was set up as a very specific thing, and it’s up to us to do what we do. And what we do, we do better than anyone else on TV.’ Part of the price of success is that we’ve had to introduce other shows. We can always get around new powers and people from other planets, but it is important that when all that dust settles that we are focussing on what we do well.”
Still, no matter whether the Arrow/Supergirl/Flash/Legends crossover includes a musical element or not, the event will be must-watch TV for fans of the series within the shared DC Comics multiverse.
