The director of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey confirms the upcoming game won’t feature a battle royale mode. With everything from Call of Duty to Battlefield cashing in on the PvP deathmatch trend, it seems that some games are still sticking with tradition.
As Ubisoft takes Assassin’s Creed further than its been before to the bloodthirsty era of Ancient Greece, whittling 100 players down to one victorious winner sounds like a gladiator grudge match dream. The industry is currently saturated with battle royale standalones, but as Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 ditches its traditional campaign, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will solely focus on a single-player story mode.
In a rapid-fire 107 questions with game director Scott Phillips, Game Informer asked if battle royale was coming to Odyssey. With a firm “no,” Phillips shunned the popular mode and twisted the knife further when he confirmed that there won’t be any multiplayer modes in the game. Although battle royale is more popular than ever and games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds are making serious money in microtransations, Phillips revealed that the notion of adding the fan-favorite mode was never discussed during Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s development process. Phillips’ words echo a recent interview with Bethesda’s Global Senior Vice President Pete Hines, who told GameSpot that battle royale wasn’t a “good fit” for Fallout 76.
There have already been comparisons pulled between Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Zack Snyder’s 300, so it is easy to see where the idea of some form of multiplayer mode could come into play. Seeing a group of Spartans take each other on in golden armor while a jeering crowd bays for blood could have also been a unique spin on the battle royale genre. That being said, fans can’t blame Ubisoft for wanting to stick to what it does best.
Multiplayer was first introduced to the Assassin’s Creed series in 2010 with Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. Although some games have included the option, other titles like Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Assassin’s Creed Origins have avoided multiplayer altogether. While battle royale will have to sit out from Assassin’s Creed for now, the series itself shows no sign of slowing down, so who knows what the future holds?
With sharks already confirmed for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, other bloodthirsty players are the least of everyone’s problems anyway and a lack of battle royale is hardly going to drive players away from the series. Heading for an October 5 release for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, October 5 release on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey promises to be the biggest game yet.
